Catherine Hardwicke is in talks to direct Miss Bala, the remake of the Mexican film that was nominated for Best Foreign Film in 2011. I’ve heard the studio is heavily courting Gina Rodriguez, among other actresses (like Michelle Rodriguez) She doesn’t have the role yet but is the front-runner. Hardwicke has separately been circling The Phantom Tollbooth, which is at sister label TriStar project. If the studio gets a star tof Miss Bala quickly, Hardwicke won’t likely catch the other train. Kevin Misher and Pablo Cruz are producing, Andy Berman is executive producer. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is adapting the script by original director Gerard Naranjo and Mauricio Katz.
The film is an adaptation of the Mexican entry for best foreign-language film at the 84th Academy Awards in 2011. It centers on a woman named Laura Guerrero who, along with her friend, enters a Miss Baja beauty pageant. She witnesses during rehearsals a gang killing Drug Enforcement Administration agents and nightclub-goers, which turns her life upside down. She’s then kidnapped by the men and forced to work for them in the deadly drug war.

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? She’s headed to Netflix. The streaming giant is rebooting the popular computer game franchise from the ’80s with an animated series surrounding the titular character. Netflix has ordered twenty 22-minute episodes of Carmen Sandiego, which is set to premiere in 2019.
Gina Rodriguez will voice the red fedora and trench coat-wearing villain, while Finn Wolfhard, who stars on Netflix’s Stranger Things, will voice Player, Carmen’s chief accomplice and friend. The educational game, which followed the globe-trotting thief around the world to teach geography lessons, spawned PBS’ live-action game shows Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? (1991 to 1996) and Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego? The character was also the subject of several book and comic series.
In the Netflix reboot, Carmen Sandiego is back and ready for a new crop of international capers packed with thrilling adventure and intrigue. The fresh take is set to present an intimate look into Carmen’s past to follow her escapades and also answer who in the world Carmen Sandiego is and why she became a super thief. The series is produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for Netflix.

Hello everyone, Gina partnered with LUNA on an Equal Pay Day campaign, which asks both men and women to fight against the gender pay gap. Playing off of Gina’s passion for boxing, the brand is debuting an equality video that follows Rodriguez for a day of training in the ring. Her strength, determination and resilience shine as an example to women everywhere to keep moving forward in the journey for equality and pay parity.
“I am proud to partner with LUNA to raise awareness for the gender pay gap – a real issue far too many women face,” said Gina. “If you are capable of doing a job, there is no reason why you should get paid any less than anyone else doing the exact same job. Together with LUNA, we’re raising awareness for equal pay, and empowering women everywhere to never settle for the status quo.”
LUNA has always believed in the power of women and a world where equal is equal. This Equal Pay Day, LUNA is proud to partner with LeanIn.Org to champion women and show why today and every day, women deserve their 20 percent.
“Women on average are paid 20 percent less than men, and Black and Hispanic women are paid even less. This hurts women, families and our economy,” said LeanIn.Org president Rachel Thomas. “We’re proud to partner with LUNA, a vocal supporter of women’s equality, to highlight the unfairness of the gender pay gap because we can’t get to equality until women are paid fairly for their work.”
